The island is located between Dominica (to the north) and Saint Lucia (to the south). Fort-de-France, the capital, is also the main port and the largest city in Martinique.

Of volcanic origin, the island of Martinique has a very mountainous landscape dominated by Mount Pelée (1,397 meters), an active volcano rising in the north of the territory as shown on the map of Martinique below. The island stretches about 80 kilometers long and 35 kilometers wide.

The island has a tropical climate and average annual temperatures rarely fall below 26°C. Rainfall varies with temperature and averages about 178 centimeters per year.

Forests cover more than a quarter of the territory and consist of mahogany and palm trees on the mountain slopes. The southern coastline of the island is fringed with marshes and mangroves.

The economy is mainly based on the tourism industry and export-oriented commercial crops. Sugarcane is the leading crop, followed by bananas, avocados, pineapples, yams, sweet potatoes, and vegetables. Horticulture is practiced on a large scale and its production is exported to many countries. The industrial sector is still underdeveloped.

As shown on the map of Martinique, the island has no railway infrastructure but has a road network about 800 kilometers long. The international airport is located in Le Lamentin.

The mild climate, beautiful beaches, and landscapes attract many foreign tourists. After the destruction of the city of Saint-Pierre in 1902, caused by the eruption of Mount Pelée which killed 30,000 people, Fort-de-France became the capital of Martinique. The ruins of the birthplace of Empress Joséphine are also among the island’s major tourist sites.

Christopher Columbus discovered Martinique during his fourth voyage. The territory was colonized by France in 1635 and later briefly occupied by the British. Except for this short period, Martinique has been under French control since 1816.
